Child Protection Reform – 2022 SA state election commitments

In readiness for the upcoming 2022 election we as peak body have listened to the voice of our Carer membership and curated 7 strong commitments we are lobbying representatives of government to endorse. These election commitments have been a work in progress, based on the substantial input received from Foster & Kinship Carers via our annual surveys, multiple reference group findings, calls received through our 1800 support line and our individual advocacy support.

We at CF&KC-SA believe South Australia must return to the premise that children and young people under guardianship are the priority for all systems within our state. South Australia can and must do more to provide secure, safe and responsive care for the growing number of children and young people under guardianship – including the Foster & Kinship families who care for them.

Each of the seven commitments is aimed at improving the child protection system for Carer families, reducing the over-reliance (and enormous expense) of residential care options – and most importantly, improving outcomes for children and young people to ensure they have the best possible chance at reaching their full potential.

We recently sent a copy of our election commitments to 38 members of parliament including current Ministers, Shadow Ministers and each Member of the Legislative Council seeking their support for the seven commitments, requesting they respond whether they are in favour or against each commitment. We will release a statement to our membership and on our website prior to the election to let our Carer community know where each party stands on these issues and if they have responded.

We look forward to sharing our progress with you in the near future regarding our lobbying efforts.

With my kindest regards,
Fiona Endacott
