Advocating for Fair Carer Payments & Superannuation for SA Foster & Kinship Carers

Last week, CF&KC-SA CEO Fiona Endacott and Project Officer Emma Feagan presented to the South Australian Economic & Finance Committee as part of the Inquiry into Children & Young People in Home Care.

As the independent peak body representing South Australia’s foster and kinship carers, we highlighted the critical role of family-based care, the financial burden carers carry, and the urgent need for reform in key areas, including:

🔹 Fair and transparent carer remuneration that reflects the true cost of care.
🔹 A review of the Complexity Assessment Tool to ensure it is fit for purpose.
🔹 Government-funded superannuation contributions to prevent long-term financial distress for carers.

With 4,105 children and young people in family-based care across SA, we emphasised that carers are not only providing stability, love, and better outcomes for young people but are also saving the state approximately $1.9 billion annually by keeping children out of costly residential care.

We thank the Committee for inviting CF&KC-SA to present on this crucial issue, listening to our evidence and asking thoughtful questions on the topic of carer remuneration. We look forward to seeing the Committees recommendations in due course.
