Carer Council Member: Kate Thomas

Kate is a foster, long term and respite carer in regional South Australia who was inspired to become a carer after her second daughter was born. Kate loves to feed people and share her home with children who need safety and love.

We asked Kate some questions about her role on the Carer Council and her life as a carer.

Q: What are your fondest memories of caring?

We have had a lot of babies placed in our care and its so special to be there for their first smile, their first sounds, their first foods. It has been wonderful to see my girls welcome new children into their home and show compassion and empathy to other people.

Q: What experience and skills do you bring to the Carer Council’s work?

I understand the challenges of being a carer and the issues faced in child protection. I believe carers are frustrated by communication with DCP and other agencies and I want to help improve this.

I have very strong connections to my community , school, church, playgroup, and scouts so I know how to communicate with different groups of people effectively.

Q: What are your hopes for the Carer Council?

I hope that we can make changes to the systems that aren’t working. I want everyone to be child focused and I want everyone to have a positive experience with DCP, so we are always achieving the best outcomes for children.

You’re a valued member of the Carer Council Kate. Thank you for your efforts.
